Meteor Crater

by Superstudio

1972

One of about 5 surviving montage/ overdrawn plates Superstudio created prior to its poster status which was presented at ‘The Story of Meteorites’ at an exhibition dedicated to ‘Architecture 1962–72’, at Brown University, Rhode Island.

This image is the product of a series inspired by Superstudios’ visit to the Meteor Crater in1972.

Considered, “a ‘tale of love’, in which Architecture is born in the crater where the avatar of Superstudio meets the cosmic force of the meteor ”.

Superstudio was an avante-garde architecture and design collective founded in Florence in1962.

Concerned more with concepts and theory than actual construction, their use of witty photo collages to challenge modernist doctrines of architecture and urban planning, opened up radical design possibilities that inspired a generation of architects that includes Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas.

The original work is held by Drawing Matter, an organisation that explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice. We have collaborated with them to bring highlights from their extraordinary collection to a wider audience. Explore Drawing Matter here
