Frame Finishes & Materials
Our frames are simple, beautifully made, and designed to last - created to sit naturally within both contemporary and traditional interiors. Each piece is made to order in your choice of finish, with proportions carefully tailored to the scale and character of the artwork.
Finishes
Below is a selection of our most commonly used finishes and frame colours. For a small surcharge, frames can be painted in any colour from Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Edward Bulmer, Paint & Paper Library, and other specialist paint suppliers.
We find that pale colours generally work best with a soft matt lacquer, while darker tones benefit from a subtle satin finish. For a softer, more timeworn character, we can also apply a dark wax over painted surfaces to create gentle depth and patina.
Wood Finishes
Oak / Clear Wax
Oak finished with a clear wax to enhance the timbers natural warmth and grain.
Oak / Dark Wax
An mellow aged oak finish with a slightly more traditional character.
Oak / Walnut Wax
Rich walnut toned wax applied to oak for a rich, warm finish.
Oak / Ebony Wax
Using wax rather than paint gives our black frame finish greater softness and depth.
Hand Painted Finishes
Pure White
A crisp, clean shade without the starkness of a brilliant white.
Off White
A perfect off-white that sits comfortably within almost any interior.
Putty
A pale, warm stone colour with an understated feel.
Mushroom
A sophisticated mid-grey with brown undertones.
Ink
An elegant blue-black with a gentler look than pure black.
Hunter Green
A rich forest green with a subtle heritage feel.
Tomato
A bright orange-red for a bolder, more expressive look.
Burnt Red
A beautiful oxidised red with warmth and depth.
Materials
We use FSC-certified timber throughout, alongside acid-free conservation materials and natural finishes wherever possible. Our giclée prints are produced on sustainably made Hahnemühle Hemp and Japanese Washi fine art papers, selected for their depth, texture, and archival quality.
We use oak for waxed finishes, allowing the natural beauty and grain of the timber to remain visible, while painted frames are produced in tulipwood, selected for its smooth and consistent surface.
Framing
Unless otherwise specified in the product notes, prints are framed edge-to-edge as standard within a narrow-profiled box frame for a simple, contemporary presentation.
Frame proportions are adjusted according to print size, with profiles typically ranging from 10–22mm wide and 33–48mm deep.
Alternative framing and mounting styles, glazing upgrades, and other bespoke specifications can be provided on request and quoted separately where applicable.
Construction & Hanging Methods
Each frame is traditionally constructed by hand, and includes an internal sub-frame which provides additional stability and long-term structural integrity to both the outer frame and glazing.
Frames are supplied ready to hang using a split batten system, allowing the artwork to sit flush against the wall rather than tilting forward, as can happen with traditional hanging methods. The split batten is fixed directly to the wall, with the frame securely slotting into place over the top.
