Chart of the Moon's Surface

by James Nasmyth

1874

This print was taken from James Nasmyth and James Carpenter's book "The Moon: Considered as a Planet, a World, and a Satellite" published in 1874.

Nasmyth developed a unique technique for creating these lunar illustrations. Rather than drawing the moon directly, he made detailed observations through his telescope and created plaster models of the lunar surface based on these observations. He then photographed these models under carefully controlled lighting to create incredibly detailed and accurate representations of the moon's surface. This innovative approach resulted in some of the most accurate and detailed lunar illustrations of the Victorian era.

The illustration would have been created through a collaboration between James Nasmyth and likely the engraver/lithographer who transferred Nasmyth's photographs of his plaster models into the printed format.

A Giclée fine art print on 310gsm Hahnemühle Hemp paper.
