Design for Niche, Villa Borghese

by Antonio Asprucci

c. 1775

This drawing is taken from a set relating to the Villa Borghese in Rome, one of many projects which the father and son duo of Antonio and Mario Asprucci worked on together. Antonio Asprucci was the principal architect for the extensive modernisation for the Villa Borghese undertaking by Prince Marcatonio and often collaborated with his son.

The Villa Borghese was originally commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1576-1633) who was the nephew of Pope Paul V (1552-1621) and whose prominent position in the church allowed him to become an influential collector and patron of the arts. In the following century Prince Marcantonio took up the Borghese tradition of art patronage, expanding the collection and undertaking large scale renovations of the Villa's architecture and gardens under Asprucci Snr.

The original drawing was made in black and grey wash, black ink, and pencil.

We were drawn to the soft shading and intricate detailing creating a pleasing sense of harmony in this piece.

The original work is held by Drawing Matter, an organisation that explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice. We have collaborated with them to bring highlights from their extraordinary collection to a wider audience. Explore Drawing Matter here
