Temple of Diana

by Mario Asprucci

c.1787-89

Mario Asprucci, son of the renowned architect Antonio Asprucci, continued his family's legacy with work on the Villa Borghese in Rome, commissioned by Prince Marcantonio IV de Borghese. While the temple still stands in the garden, the iconic statue of the goddess Diana, a Roman copy from the 2nd century CE, is now housed in the Louvre.

The original drawing, executed in pen, ink, and wash on laid paper, highlights the soft pink marble sections of the Villa Borghese.

The original work is held by Drawing Matter, an organisation that explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice. We have collaborated with them to bring highlights from their extraordinary collection to a wider audience. Explore Drawing Matter here.
