Taken from a selection of plans and elevations for a townhouse in Clichy This work came from the collection of Ralph Holland (1912-2012) a Courtauld-trained art historian who taught at Newcastle University and was a well known collector of old-master drawings, several of which he bequeathed to the British Museum.

This drawing is part of a series of plans and elevations for a townhouse in Clichy, France. The work comes from the collection of Ralph Holland (1912-2012), a Courtauld-trained art historian who taught at Newcastle University and was a renowned collector of old-master drawings. Several of his drawings are now part of the British Museum's collection.

While little is known about the drawing's creator, its crisp, clean lines and calming symmetry are characteristic of the Louis XVI style. The original drawing was made using black ink and grey and black washes on paper.
