Lawrence of Arabia

James Gowan (1923-2012) was a Scottish architect and teacher who, with James Stirling, formed a renowned partnership known for their radical post-modernist designs.

This print features a photographic contact sheet of medium format negatives, some double exposed, with an additional frame of Lawrence of Arabia taped over one. The building in the background is a design from Gowan's Greenwich Housing Project.

Gowan was deeply interested in the context of his housing projects. This print is part of a series that reimagines Greenwich in different settings, such as the Sahara surrounded by camels. Gowan's playful juxtaposition of a London housing estate with an iconic 20th-century film is typical of his approach and sense of humour.
