Taken from an album of 34 technical drawings made in the Ecole de Mineurs in Saint Etienne; an engineering college in France established by Louis XVIII in 1816.
Originally conceived to create Master-Miners, in 1831 the school received a royal charter officially recognising it as an engineering college and today it remains one of the most prestigious in France. This hand-drafted wash drawing is taken from a portfolio of designs and studies that explore topography, machinery and forces relating to mining in the Rhone-Alps region
The original work is held by Drawing Matter, an organisation that explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice. We have collaborated with them to bring highlights from their extraordinary collection to a wider audience. Explore Drawing Matter here.

Jean-François Ravat was a student of the Ecole Des Mines in St Etienne, an engineering college in France established by Louis XVIII in 1816. Originally conceived to create master miners, in 1831 the school received a royal charter officially recognising it as an engineering college and today it remains one of the most prestigious in France. Ravat trained there as a draughtsman and produced many technical drawings during his studies.
This is a drawing of a 'Medici Vase’, a bell-shaped krater carved from marble and originating from Ancient Greece. This artwork appears to be an anomaly, as it was taken from a portfolio of designs and studies that explore topography, machinery and forces relating to mining in the Rhone-Alps region of France.
The original drawing was made in pen and ink on wove paper from a bound book of hand-drawn plates. It is beautifully rendered, and its isolation on the page lends it a graphic quality.
