Gio Ponti

1960s

From a series of illustrated letters sent by Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti to his publisher Daria Guarnati in the 1960s.

The letters often deal with ordinary matters, but are treated with a sense of play and invention. As he wrote: “Enchantment: a useless thing, but as indispensable as bread.”

The original work is held by Drawing Matter, an organisation that explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice. We have collaborated with them to bring highlights from their extraordinary collection to a wider audience. Explore Drawing Matter here
